Is it too early to start talking song of the summer? With one of the most wholesome music videos you’ll see this year, boygenius are back with another teaser for their highly anticipated full length record, from the powerful trio consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker. While each artist had been working on solo projects for years leading up to boygenius’ formation and the resulting 6 song ep that came out in 2018, at that time none of them had truly struck fame yet. Phoebe Bridgers has accumulated the most solo streams to date especially with her grammy nominated record Punisher in 2020, but Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus are no slouches themselves by any means. With their incredible vocal chemistry, powerful storytelling, and just overall charisma, this trio is a powerhouse that we should feel unworthy to be receiving a full length album from in 2023.
On this track we have a bittersweet symphony of painful lyrics interlaced with a feel good tune. With a chorus that resounds with “I don’t know why I am the way that I am, not strong enough to be your man,” and a bridge that speaks “always an angel, never a god,” we get a powerful upside down assertion from our resident geniuses paired with some immaculate and light production. I absolutely foresee this one landing on a playlist of mine for summer nights, but I'm also going to enjoy watching the flowers bloom with this one as well.
The first three singles came out in January, and I still haven’t taken them out of my rotation. This fourth single doesn’t look to be leaving rotation anytime soon either.
