Babygirl’s playful songwriting is truly a sight for ‘Sore Eyes’

In a world of washed out pop lyrics, Babygirl are an enticing discovery. On their newest EP “Be Still My Heart,” they’ve included tracks dating back to 2021, but I’ve only recently discovered them through the catchy tune “Sore Eyes.” “I felt like a pool drain on the last day of summer,” is how they start the track, an image that gives sad nostalgia, which makes it all the more refreshing when the chorus comes in perfectly encapsulating that person in our life who embodies a breath of fresh air. I only have good things to say about this track, but the praise doesn’t end there. The duo proclaims their mission statement as “bittersweet pop rock,” and they certainly nail the sound on songs like Starlight and the youthfulness of “Me, You & My Car,” displaying excellent songwriting and musicality in the process. The song “Always” adds a needed edge to the project and closes with the solemn “Born with a Broken Heart.” I appreciate the foreword moving storytelling and can hear the influence from great storytellers like The 1975, Taylor Swift, or even older Paramore.

It’s songs like this that flooded my Springtime and are looping back around for my end of summer feels as well. I appreciate the diversion from pop mainstream as it’s certainly been a while since I would describe a song or an ep as effervescent, but here we are. Take your time enjoying this one on as the summer winds down, follow along with all our updates on Barely Everything, and you can find all my discoveries on Garrett’s Finds playlist on Spotify linked below.

For fans of: bittersweet pop rock, The 1975, summer nostalgia, dare I say T-Swift?
