Anna Shoemaker's 'Holly' is a Shout-Worthy Masterpiece

You know those songs that you only need to hear for about 0.2 seconds before adding them to your playlist? Well, I don't think my fingers could hit that "add" button fast enough on this one. Since then, Anna Shoemaker's 'Holly' has been on steady repeat and it somehow hasn't gotten old.

My favorite thing about this song is the intimacy in the songwriting. Shoemaker recalls a conversation with "Holly" and invites the listener to join in on the gossip. Not only do you feel present when listening to this record, but personally invested in the story being told. I had this sense of truly wanting the best for the artist by the end of the story. Lyrics like "I spilled coffee on my shirt, so I wore his out" offer such a sweet depiction of what would usually be a somewhat mundane event in a relationship. In context however, its melancholic undertones amplify the vulnerability of the line. Not to mention how straight up catchy the melodies and multiple vocal layers feel throughout the chorus, like a warm cup of tea for the ears.

While this was my first time hearing the Philly-native artist, a quick dive into her catalog tells the story of a musician on a journey to blend eclectic pop, heartwarming RnB, and indie rock into a uniquely infectious and diverse sound. Give this one a listen in our playlist below if you haven't yet and keep an eye out for Anna Shoemaker this year!
